The most passive aggressive way for me to let my extended family know I’m an atheist: sending out secular holiday cards and signing them Happy Holidays, even though everyone I’m sending them to celebrates christmas.

My roommate was not kidding when she said the new Alice in Wonderland puts her to sleep. Fifteen minutes in she was totally out. So I chowed down on Salsa and Lime chips without feeling like a pig.

“Got to 58 minutes before the blu-ray started skipping, then froze. It refused to play the rest, even after cleaning the disc. But honestly, it wasn’t that good. The tattoo girl was totally unlikable, with her Edward Scissor-hands look, ridiculous face piercings and boy’s haircut. Not to mention her angry-at-the-world attitude. Please God, I hope no one looks to her as a role model. Then, I learned the movie is TWO and a HALF HOURS? Really? This story is soooo complex that it needs over two hours of my time? I don’t think so.”

Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that teens probably won’t be clamoring to see this this mature, subtitled drama. It’s plenty lusty (including fairly graphic sex scenes with partial and near-full nudity) and doesn’t shy away from examining what lies behind obsessive sexual attraction. Married men and women engage in illicit trysts, and some relationships are painted coldly, with sex as the fuel rather than love. And even when it is love that inspires affection, it doesn’t seem to be able to triumph over lust. There’s also some drinking and smoking and fairly minor violence.
- Families can talk about what the movie is saying about love and sex. Do the two always go hand in hand? Parents, if you watch with your teens, use this as an opportunity to talk to them about your own values regarding sex and relationships.
- Why do you think Ryno and Vellini can’t seem to stay away from each other — even though they don’t appear to make each other happy? Should relationships really be conducted with strategy in mind?
- Sexual Content
- Plenty of scenes with partial or nearly full nudity (breasts and backsides are bared; couples are shown in a variety of sexual positions). Lots of moaning and guttural sounds made during sex. Some sexually tinged scenes involving blood. Two women kiss briefly.

- Two men shoot at each other during a duel over a woman’s affections. Later, that same woman slashes her lover’s cheek in what’s supposed to be a playful manner.

Women discuss ways to “play” the game of love, a la The Rules — as if deceit and strategy are the name of the game.
A couple engages in an illicit extramarital affair. A kept woman beds men to maintain a certain lifestyle; she also pursues a married man even when he tries to cut off ties.

This just cracks me up. Mostly because you can tell the bias behind it; sex and women who enjoy it are scandalous and possibly evil, and men are helpless to their seductive ways. Shame shame, women, for being sexual.
So then I made this a game and looked up other “common sense” ratings. The one for Atonement doesn’t even mention the rape, which would be much more serious subject matter than the lovemaking between Cecilia and Robbie. I guess I’ll never understand other people’s perceptions of what is dangerous.
Believe Me, I Will
Sometimes, I wonder what happened to the little girl who liked to play dress up.
Now, I’m a (rather) responsible adult who actually knows how to make wise choices most of the time. And this is what I wanted? All those years when I wished and wished to be an adult instead of a child? I was once a cute little girl who wanted to be just like Jasmine from Aladdin and now I’m someone who can make decisions that affect someone else’s life. I dread the day I decide to have children and have even more decisions on my plate that will determine someone’s entire future.
Right now all I wish is that I could be that little girl running around in princess clothes with a tiara on, learning to write my name and read fairy tales.
Instead, I’ll just pour myself more vodka and drink myself to sleep so that maybe my dreams will allow me to be that little girl again, at least until morning.
